To keep things simple while I’m on the road, I will be uploading my favorites of the photos I don’t use in other blog posts to my Instagram page. My account and its photos will be linked to this page. Many of my posts have more than one photo, so if the square icon is in the upper right corner, click on the photo to see the whole post on instagram.

The Crocodile Stone is believed to have been used The Crocodile Stone is believed to have been used in annual human sacrifice rituals. It was found at the site of a younger Khmer-Hindu temple complex in Southern Laos. Despite this site having been selected for UNESCO World Heritage status, note the garbage heap from lazy employees of the drink stand at the top of the hill.

Laos' wild population of moon bears has almost cea Laos' wild population of moon bears has almost ceased to exist. Paochers capture them to milk their gall bladders via hypodermic for the bile used in traditional Chinese medicine. They are also driven out of their habitat by the worst deforestation I've ever seen and sold on the black pet market.

The sanctuary I visited has nine moon bears and one sun bear - all from the pet trade - that they will care for as long as the government maintains their funding. Their other center has four bears rescued from the bile harvesters among others. None of these bears will ever be released back into the wild because most of them were captured as cubs and have no knowledge of how to survive on their own and are often afflicted by neurological and physical ailments resulting from extended, inhumane captivity. Furthermore, there is essentially nowhere left in Laos where they could be released without immediately being killed for their meat by villagers or loggers.

Note: the bears have a large outdoor space they can play and lounge in, but we arrived after feeding time and the staff graciously allowed us to meet the bears and look around their facility.

Since they don't really have seasons in this region, they can harvest the young tea leaves once every three weeks, while tea plantations in places like Vietnam and Northern India can only harvest during short, yearly windows.
